The Oulipo is a Paris-based "workshop" of poets, writers, artists, and mathematicians, that formed in 1960 to explore "potential literature" (OUvroir de LIttérature POtentielle) and the relationship of formalism and literature. From such esoteric origins arose a rich and, frankly, awesome body of works, along with a whole catalog of "constraints," tools to use to make your own poetry and literature. Oulipo, SLC is for enthusiasts of the group that has included such illustrious members as Raymon …
I have wanted to be in a book club for a long time, but cringe when my friends tell me their clubs are reading "Diaries of a Shoppaholic" and the like. I love to read, but feel like I have a more and more difficult time finding books that I really love. I would like to start a group that could meet monthly and, in addition to the typical pick a book, read and discuss, talk in general about books we love and why. Perhaps every other meeting we could pick a book to read that either one member love …
Do you regret not paying attention during your literature classes in high school? Would you like to read the "classics" and discuss them with others? If so, you've found the right club. We will be reading a wide range of modern, ancient, medieval and contemporary classic books from around the globe! Anything over 600 pages.... we'll probably split into two meetings. **Ideally** you should have the novels read before you attend a meetup, but you don't have to or even have started them! But Come r …
Read. Eat. Discuss. Have fun. Repeat. Food and books--almost as good of a pair as milk and cookies. Or Lennon and McCartney. This is all about getting together with other people who enjoy eating and reading and discussing what makes literature great and any other topics that may come up. With so many books in print it is good to have direction from other avid readers to know what to read next. What better avenue than over a delicious meal at one of SLC's fine dining venues? Classic reading …
“In 1816 Mary and Percy Bysshe Shelley visited Lord Byron at his villa in Switzerland. Among other subjects, the conversation turned to the feasibility of returning a corpse or assembled body parts to life. Sitting around a log fire at Byron's villa, the company also amused themselves by reading German ghost stories, prompting Byron to suggest they each write their own supernatural tale. Mary Shelley conceived the idea for Frankenstein and Lord Byron managed to write a short fragment based on va …

Poetry surrounds us in music, plays, prayer, and some prose. It's the most ancient form of communicating stories across generations. Yet, many of us are intimidated by "Poetry." I don't understand much poetry, but I enjoy it even when I don't grasp it. I find opportunities to discuss poetry in a low key, friendly, intelligent environment to be wholly lacking. Therefore, I reach out to those who might enjoy convivial discussions about poetry of most any form . Perhaps there are others in the Meet …
I decided to form this group because there are not very many book clubs on Meetup for the SLC area. For now I do not want to limit the club to a certain type of book. Instead, I would love to open it up to new fellow members as to what genre of fiction or non-fiction they would like to discuss. I also want the book selection to be democratic through polls, rather than a dictatorship. In summary, if you love to read and would like to meet other bookworms to discuss the book of the meeting (but I …
