Many teens and young adults are challenged (aka required) to read "the classics" in high school or college literature courses. Yet others either didn't have those courses, never took those electives or just flat out "didn't want" to read these books at that point in their lives. As we grow older and (hopefully) wiser, we now begin to ask did we miss something? Or if you did read the classics, is there something more now that I'm at a different life stage? Are you an avid reader who likes to re …

Enjoy Shakespeare in a whole new way, where everyone participates equally. Here’s how it works: at the appointed hour, we meet and greet each other, and take our seats in a circle. We don't choose parts. Instead, the first reader launches into the opening lines of the play. When the speaker changes in the script, the next reader takes over, and so on. The first time around the circle, you might be the king, the next time, an unnamed maiden! If a speech is long, the reader changes every 8 lines, …

I want to create a group of readers to meet bi-weekly or monthly to discuss a book we all have choosen to read. I'm looking for a variety of participants, guys, gals, younger, older, middle age, etc. I believe a mixed group leads to a variety of opinions we all can learn from, even if we don't agree. The books will be a variety of fiction, best sellers and non-fiction. Once a critical mass of six or so people sign up, we'll start deciding on when and where to meet and what book to start off with …

Leaving no page unturned, and no glass empty! A new twist on an old idea (a 'novel' concept, if you'll pardon the pun)...Book clubs and reading groups are great, but 'ABC Club' aims to shake those notions up just a bit. 'ABC Club' is for women only (sorry guys!) and meets at least once a month to hold a book discussion, and also to share in a yummy potluck gathering including appetizers (finger foods) and beverages (can be of the ‘adult’ variety, but doesn’t necessarily have to be). Books may b …

I'm establishing a book meetup group that is a little different. In this group, instead of everyone reading the same book, we will pick out our own book and share what we've read at our meetups. We will get first hand accounts from each other about books we might not normally read. We may indeed find out we would like to read the others' books, or at the least learn about some things outside of our normal comfort zone.
It's time to take another look at some of those books we read (or pretended to read) in high school or college. If you went to high school in the 40s or 50s, you actually read books! Authors of fiction such as Dickens, Tolstoy, Camus, Kipling, and Elliott are some of the ones to re-consider. Then there's all that nonfiction, of course, especially the ones we were supposed to read in history, social studies, anthropology and philosophy classes. I've discovered that now, as a gray-haired grandma, …

Hi ladies! Let's get together for a great book read and brunch. We will meet every 4th Sunday at 11:00. The other difference is the place and the book. For our first meeting, bring your reading list so that we can fill the calendar for the year with our book every month. I want you all to enjoy every book that we read! See you on June 23 at the Elephant Bar!

Bring ideas for books, as well as other cultural events that might be interesting to attend. Let's have fun! Take care, Gia
